Drone Wedding Videography: What You Need to Know
Drone footage has become a standard part of premium wedding videography — and for good reason. A well-timed aerial reveals what no ground camera can: the scale of your venue, the landscape surrounding your ceremony, the moment you exit the church from above. When it's done well, it adds genuine cinematic dimension to a wedding film.
When it's done poorly — or illegally — it's a liability and a distraction.
Here's everything you need to know before adding drone to your wedding package.
What Drone Footage Actually Adds
Venue context. An aerial shot of a vineyard, a coastal estate, or a hilltop ceremony location tells the viewer where they are in a way no ground shot can replicate.
Ceremony exits and dramatic reveals. The drone ascending from the couple's first kiss while the crowd surrounds them. The couple walking out of the church as the aerial pulls back to reveal the full courtyard. These are cinematic moments that photograph well because they have movement and scale.
Landscape beauty. If you're getting married somewhere with natural beauty — Malibu, Santa Barbara, the Napa Valley — a drone shot of the surrounding landscape gives your film a sense of place.
Creative transitions. In editing, drone shots work well as transitions between scenes. An aerial of the venue at dusk cuts to the interior reception and creates a visual shift that keeps the film moving.
When Drone Footage Doesn't Add Much
Indoor weddings. Drones can't fly indoors (safely or legally in most cases). If your entire wedding is in a hotel ballroom, drone footage of the building's exterior won't add much to your film.
Restricted venues. Many urban venues, venues near airports, and certain parks are in restricted airspace. More on this below.
Poor weather. Drone operators can't fly in strong wind or rain. Have a backup plan.
As a checkbox. Couples sometimes request drone because they've seen it in other films and assume it's always good. If your venue doesn't lend itself to aerial footage, forcing it in won't improve your film.
The Legal Requirements You Need to Know
This is where many couples get surprised. In the United States, commercial drone operation requires:
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Anyone flying a drone commercially — including for your wedding — must hold this license. This is not optional. It's federal law.
- Airspace authorization. Many locations require advance authorization from the FAA before flying. LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) provides same-day authorization for many areas. Others require waivers filed weeks in advance.
- Venue permission. The FAA licenses the operator; the venue controls the property. You need both to fly legally.
Ask your videographer directly: are you FAA Part 107 certified? Can I see your certificate? This is not an awkward question — it's a basic due diligence question that any licensed operator will answer without hesitation.
Unlicensed drone operators are common in the wedding industry. Their footage may look fine, but they're operating illegally, which creates liability for them and potentially for your venue.

- How much footage do I get, and how will it be edited into the film?
