Why Engagement Sessions Matter for Your Wedding
The first 30 minutes of any photo session involve some degree of awkwardness. You're figuring out how to stand, how to hold each other, what to do with your hands. For most people, being photographed doesn't feel natural at first — and that's completely normal.
The engagement session burns through that awkwardness before the wedding day. By the time you're in front of the camera on your wedding day, you've already been through it. You know what your photographer's direction sounds like. You know how to respond. The result is better, more relaxed wedding photos.
Best Engagement Session Locations in Los Angeles
Griffith Park and the Observatory. The classic LA backdrop. The city sprawl behind the couple, the observatory architecture, and multiple terrain options from trails to formal lawns. Golden hour here is reliable and stunning.
Malibu coast and PCH. For couples who want ocean and natural light, the Malibu coastline offers beaches, bluffs, and golden-hour access. El Matador State Beach, in particular, has dramatic sea stacks and arches that photograph beautifully.
Runyon Canyon. Urban hiking aesthetic with city views. Great for active couples who want something less formal.

What to Wear
Wear something that feels like you. The photos will outlast whatever trend you're dressing for. Couples who wear clothes they actually like — and feel comfortable in — always photograph better than couples who dressed up in a way that feels performative.
Coordinate without matching. Complementary colors and similar formality levels work better than identical outfits. Think about how your clothes will look against the backdrop you've chosen.

What to Expect Logistically
A standard engagement session runs 60–90 minutes. That's enough time for two locations or two outfits at one location, a range of poses from relaxed to formal, and a variety of focal lengths (wide environmental shots, close portraiture).
Sessions typically happen during the final 90 minutes before sunset — what photographers call golden hour. The light is warm, soft, and flattering in a way that midday sun simply isn't.
