What Is a Same-Day Edit at a Wedding?
A same-day edit (SDE) is a short wedding film — typically 3 to 5 minutes — that is edited during your wedding day and screened at your reception, usually during dinner. Your guests watch the morning of your wedding play back while they're still at the wedding.
It sounds like a luxury add-on. For certain weddings, it's one of the most memorable moments of the whole day.
How a Same-Day Edit Works
Here's the typical workflow:
- Ceremony ends. The SDE editor (usually a third team member separate from your main camera operators) takes the footage shot from the morning prep and ceremony and immediately begins editing.
- Editing happens during cocktail hour and early reception. While you're taking portraits and your guests are mingling, the editor is cutting footage, selecting music, and building the film.
- Film is screened during dinner. Usually around the first or second course, the film plays on the reception screens or a projector. Two to three minutes of footage that captures everything that happened that morning.
- Guests react in real time. This is the moment. Guests who were at the ceremony watching from afar now see the close-up — the tears, the expressions, the small moments they missed. It's consistently one of the most emotional moments of any reception where we've screened one.
Who Should Add a Same-Day Edit
Large or multi-location weddings. If your morning ceremony and afternoon reception are at different venues, or if you have hundreds of guests who couldn't all be close to the ceremony, an SDE lets everyone experience what it looked like.
South Asian, Jewish, and multi-ceremony weddings. These often have morning rituals and ceremonies that most reception guests don't witness. Screening a morning film at the reception is a way to bring those ceremonies into the shared experience of the day.
Couples who want a unique reception moment. The typical dinner reception has toasts, first dances, and cake. An SDE adds a moment that's genuinely surprising and emotionally powerful — something guests consistently talk about long after the wedding.
Same-Day Edit vs. Highlight Film
A same-day edit and a highlight film are not the same thing. The SDE is optimized for speed — it's edited in 3–4 hours with the raw footage available. The highlight film is your main deliverable, edited over weeks with full access to all footage and a more refined, cinematic approach.
Most couples who book an SDE still receive a full highlight film afterward. The SDE is an addition, not a replacement.
