Persian Wedding Traditions

Let's get started - I can't wait to meet you!

Today’s traditional Persian weddings are a harmonious and beautiful combination of the past and the present. As the bride (Aroos) and groom (Damad) begin their new life together, their wedding celebrates the harmony and prosperity ahead of them. Details and customs of a traditional Persian wedding – an Aroosi – differ slightly from region to region. Traditional pre-wedding rituals may include a formal proposal ceremony – a Beleh Boran – and a henna night – a Hana Bandan. The ceremony itself is anchored it ancient traditions and does not vary much from century to century. Yet individuality exists. From courting and the proposal – Khastegaree - to the wedding reception party - Mehmooni - there are many elements that make each traditional Persian wedding ceremony unique. As photographers we understand the importance and beauty of each of these elements and appreciate that our couples have welcomed us into this sacred and special part of their journey.

The Significance of the Persian Wedding Tradition

Let's get started - I can't wait to meet you!

The Aroosi is made up of two parts: the Aghd (the wedding ceremony) and the Mehmoonee (the wedding reception). These two distinct parts allow an effortless blend of ancient and Western wedding traditions. The Aghd focuses on the uniting of two families through the exchanging of the vows, rings and sharing of the Sofreh Aghd (the bride and groom’s wedding ceremony table). Teeming with symbolic elements and blessings, the Sofreh Aghd is the most prominent and (arguably) important element of the Persian wedding tradition.

From the basket of fruit on the Sofreh Aghd to jewels on your body, we know you have spent precious time choosing every detail of the wedding. When we arrive on your special day, one of the first things we do is photograph the wedding shoes, clothes, jewelry, and bridal bouquet. Selecting simple yet unique backgrounds, we showcase the wedding accessories with as much thought as you put into choosing them.

We would not be able to capture the memories our Aroos and Damad want unless we understood the importance of each element in the ceremony. We have immersed ourselves with the Persian culture. We pride ourselves in knowing how and what to highlight in the ceremony and with our couples. From the groom looking at his bride’s reflection in the Sofreh Aghd mirror to the guests showering the couple with sugared almond pieces, we know the details to capture and why they are so important.

When you first see your wedding ceremony site in person it will be the culmination of months and months of meticulous planning on your part. It will also be full of the people you love! You will have many people to talk to you and it’s quite possible you won’t notice all of the beautiful nuances you spent months creating. That is why we photograph these details for you. After the wedding you can look back and see (perhaps for the first time) the beautiful, symbolic details of your ceremony, like the honey in its beautiful vessel and the artfully assembled Khoncheh (seven herbs and spices in seven different colors representing prosperity and spiciness of life).

After the intimate ceremony there’s a grand celebration: the Jashn e Aroosi. The Persian wedding reception is a celebratory time that portrays the same theme and ambiance as the Aghd. Like the Aghd, the reception mirrors harmony and prosperity through beautiful, intricate details. We will arrive before guests do to take detailed photos of the reception room empty. We’ll capture the ambiance and mood of your reception with lighting techniques and years of experience photographing Aroosi.

When your guests enter the wedding reception we’ll look for those special moments that capture the ambiance of the room, party and people. For example, we’ll anticipate those special moments like when you’re given the knife to cut the wedding cake from one of the Ragsheh Chagoo dancers and when your guests begin showering you with rose petals. While these traditions are similar at many Aroosi, what makes them unique are the smiles and emotions at your own. Those are the smiles and emotions we will capture as we photograph an Aroosi that is uniquely yours. Below are some examples of such wedding reception moments:
